Doctoral Candidates
Did you know that in Germany graduate students are actually not called students anymore? We use the latin word 'Doktorand'
which means 'somebody who is about to become a Doctor'. Most of them are hired by the university and their job position
is: scientific employee. Also, the supervising professor is not called an advisor or supervisor,
but rather the Doktorvater (doctor father) or Doktormutter (doctor mother), respectively.
I value all of these names a lot: the word 'Doktorand' and the job position as 'scientific employee' shows that grad students
are actually (junior) scientists and not students anymore. That a supervisor
is called the doctor mother or doctor father shows the deep relationship between a teacher and his/her student in academia. So,
here are my two doctor children :-)
